1 In a way this is a "Memory Exhibition," a strange litany for youth at the moment of my youth. Don't we all share one common fear ... the fear of change, of growing old, of dying? The five central monuments are erected to commemorate five moments. Monitors housed inside are vehicles for the memory, providing tangible proof of the occurrences. Knowing everything to be transitory we seek to solidify certain moments, to perpetuate their existence, to deny death. We are surrounded daily by symbols of Justice, Liberty, charity, Wisdom, etc. Almost always these ideals are represented by the female figure in the prime of life, when she is the most desirable. We desire the ideals; to possess them. Our reality in space-time is, however, never static and life's dynamic movement toward death is accepted fact. Is it not logical to conclude that the same holds true for these noble ideals, that the same fate awaits civilization ... or does Faith dissolve fact? Signs abound which leads us to conclude that within the seasonal spectrum we are certainly approaching winter. So, on this white column are the reflections of illusions, fire, toxic gas, death-colors of the Fall ... gold, red, black, and grey. If this work seems pessimistic then it is paradoxical; this work is actually about Hope. V.V. 1987 |
