about Machiko
Kusahara , Ph. D Machiko Kusahara became involved in new media since early 1980s. Starting with SIGGRAPH'85 Traveling Art Show, she has been involved in curation and planning in the field of computer graphics, multimedia, interactive art, and pre-cinema. Her curatorial and planning activities took place at NTT/InterCommunication Center, Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography, Berlin Transmediale, Video Positive, Nagoya Design EXPO 98, NHK Gallery, Sony SOMIDO Hall, among many others. She also served as a jury member for many festivals such as LIFE, SIGGRAPH, Ars Electronica, SF MOMA Webby Award, Interactive Media Festival, to name a few. She has taught media art theory and practice at the Faculty of Art of Tokyo Institute of Polytechnic from April 1994 to March 1998, before joining Kobe University. Since April 2002 she teaches at UCLA as a visiting professor at the Department of Design|Media Arts. Her recent research is on the co-relationship among art, science, technology and the traditional cultural background, especially in relation to virtual reality and alife. She coauthored many books including "The Robot in the Garden" (MIT Press) and art@science (Springer) . Her writings are published in ten languages in twelve countries. Her solo and collaborative works have been shown at SIGGRAPH, Alvar Aalto Museum, among others. |
