MORTAL COILSCarollee Schneemann
Carolee Schneemann is a legend in the fields of performance art and cinema. Her groundbreaking work has featured the body since the classic Meat Joy of 1964. MORTAL COILS fragments, reflects, tilts, and refracts the knot of grief at loss, the absence of the dead. In 1993 and early 1994 fifteen friends died, each death altering the interchange of our work, our lives. A visual memorial, it addresses symbolic and figurative representations of death, and the incapacity of our culture to attend to personal loss and grief. - CS.
(the fifteen friends: Alf Bold, John Cage, Frank Pileggi, John Caldwell, Lejaren Hiller, Derek Jarman, Juan Downey, Margorie Keller, Barbara Lehmann, Peter Moore, Charlotte Moorman, David Rattray, Joe Jones, Paul Sharits, and Hannah Wilke).
