SECTION I: BREAKING WITH TRADITION

Chapter 1 - Network Artists as Anticipatory Design Scientists

1.10 Stream of Consciousness as Performance: "Everything I Know Project"

1.10.1 Fuller's performance career peaked in 1975 when Pennsylvania Bell offered him the use of their state of the art video studio at the Pennsylvania Bell Telephone Company in Philadelphia with the expressed purpose of enabling him to utilise the equipment in whatever way he saw fit. The result was forty-two hours of "thinking out loud" sessions recorded live with multiple cameras over a twelve week period. The video is entitled Everything I Know. [9] Almost twenty years earlier a similar attempt to document Fuller's stream of consciousness was made at Southern Illinois University by Harold Cohen, head of the Design Department at the time. Twenty hours were recorded on film, and thirty-two hours were recorded on audio tape. The project ran over budget and was eventually abandoned. Not until video technology was available did it become a possibility again. Fuller called this recording the "inventory of his experiences" and calculated the number of hours it would take him to recount this orally. (Fuller's letter to William Harley, 1974) The result was forty-two hours of performance narrative of Synergetics, Geodesics, the Dymaxion map, Anticipatory Design Science, the World Game, and Spaceship Earth. He used models, diagrams, photos, slides, artefacts, news clippings, and other props to keep himself going. Video turned out to be just as problematic however, because the media does not lend itself to long term preservation, but even more because of its inherent linear quality. Fuller's talks are omni-directional and lend themselves really well to interactive structuring, which is finally available. Indeed he imagined an Omni directional TV set in Explorations in Geometry of Thinking. (Synergestic Dictionary, 801.22) The Buckminster Fuller Institute recognises this multi-linear aspect of his work and is launching a broad effort to create a large online database on the Net. Notes:

9. Everything I Know audio tapes are 42 hours of Fuller explaining everything. Available from the Buckminster Fuller Institute. They also own, but do not sell, the 42 hour video version. [back]
