SECTION II: BUILDING MANY WORLDS
Chapter 4 - Distributed Identity: Phantom Captains and Avatars
4.1 Introduction
In the last three chapters I introduced the artist, the context, and the emerging telematic culture. In the next three, I will look at distributed identity, database aesthetics, and community. All three are directly related to telematic culture and orient the net artist toward understanding the environment we are confronted with. Issues of online identity are of primary concern for net art, because it directly impacts not only how we perceive ourselves as artists but how we relate to and work with our audiences. At the outset, I would like to make it clear that I purposely refrain from using the term "user" when referring to my work, because it runs counter to my aims as an artist and net persona. Instead I use "participant" and consider the audience collaborators in the process.
