SECTION III: INFORMATION PERSONAE CONSTRUCTION
Chapter 9 - Projecting Many Futures
9.8 Community of People with No Time
9.8.1 Many people who created their bodies in Bodies INCorporated demanded an addition of a community component, which made me consider the meaning of community in networked spaces (chapter 6). Further, it made me think what community of people I belong to already and realise that it is largely people without time. I started creating databases of people on various cities who I have contact with and like exchanging information with. This was started through the Bodies INCorporated project by creating a separate section of bodies that were created while I was visiting, in residency, or exhibiting the bodies in galleries or museums. So far, I have established a database of people from Wales, UK (CAiiA); Dublin, Ireland (ArtHouse); Los Angeles, CA (Barnsdall Gallery); Dallas, Texas (University of Dallas, TX); Santa Barbara (UCSB); and Montreal, Australia (conference) [5]
9.8.2 The next step will be to extend invitations to people I have made contact with to create an agent in the Data Mining People project and start with a 'shadow body,' which consists of only an outline. As information is ingested, the wire frame and the vertices start appearing and the body assumes a three-dimensional form. Data is attached to the points in the vertices. The more information is input, the more active the body becomes and threads to other bodies carrying similar information or accessing their will be seen. The threads are colour coded for instant understanding of the type of information that is being stored or exchanges. [6] Very dynamic bodies eventually get subsumed in the many threads and their bodily shape is lost. Those that are passive and not connecting start losing the intensity of colour and return to their shadow self. In this environment life and death assume a meaning connected to the use of information that is attached to the person who successfully projected certain knowledge and is useful to many, regardless of whether they are physically living or not.
9.8.3 In Community of People With No Time, people are asked to completely shed the idea of the body. This will be a purely functional space in which IP moves autonomously and becomes part of the collective community topography. The way the information is delivered is completely up to the participant. In fact, one may choose not to have any contact with their IP and take the option to occasionally view the their trace in the main entrance to the project. The level of communication is also determined by the participant. One may decide to be completely encrypted and off limits, or on the other extreme, completely open, accessible, and public. The viewers of the site will be interested to see the level of activity and the difference in how those too busy to be online are visualised. The time spent on their data by other participants and the audience will be measured and will have a direct influence on the topography of the IP. [7] [top]
Notes:5. For more on site specific bodies, see CD-ROM. [back]
6. Colour codes are still being determined, but an example may be: text: blue; html: green; image: red; audio: purple, and so on. [back]
7. Some of the most impressive work done on measuring and visualising information activity is being researched by the Pacific National Laboratory. The most developed of the technologies are the Special Paradigm for Information Retrieval and Exploration (SPIRE) programs. These programs read and summarise a document, organise the information, and create a map of the data on the screen. They are already being used by governmental entities such as NASA and CIA. see CD-ROM or go to: http://multimedia.pnl.gov:2080/infoviz/technologies.html#galaxies [back]
