Modern analytical methods still examine form and structure in order to generate knowledge. Just as in the sixteenth century, repetition of forms and even objects across disciplinary boundaries is common. Today, however, the same forms tend to be used for different ends, and similarities are viewed as coincidental.

The most basic geometric form--the cube--is also the most common. It seems to show up in every field in some way. Salt molecules are cubes; psychologists test intelligence with cubes (and round holes); artists study cast shadows using cubes. The examples in this case represent just a few versions of the basic cube.
