The primary goal of the Globus project is to provide basic technology that enables entirely new classes of applications.  We study applications in order to understand how to build programs for the grid, to focus the research efforts of the project, and to evaluate the utility of the tools we have developed - and often because they are fun and interesting in their own right.

Applications that can benefit from Globus technologies can be loosely classified as one of the following types:

Distributed Supercomputing

Distributed supercomputing applications have large computational requirements that can be met only by simultaneous execution across  multiple supercomputers.

The image to the right is generated by SF-Express, a large-scale simulation developed at Caltech that obtains access to multiple supercomputer resources by using Globus. Image from SF-Express simulation.

Smart Instruments

Computational grids can enhance the power of scientific instruments by providing access to data archives and on-line processing capabilities.

We are using Globus to couple an advanced X-ray source (the APS) to a supercomputer in order to perform sophisticated on-line processing and interactive visualization. cholera.GIF (44152 bytes)

Teleimmersive Applications

Teleimmersive applications combine simulation, virtual reality, and collaborative environments to provide a shared, virtual design space.  Teleimmersive applications can be extremely demanding, requiring large amounts of computation and stringent and diverse network support.

The Electronic Visualization Laboratory at the University of Illinois at Chicago is using Globus to build CavernSoft, a toolkit for building teleimmersive applications.  NICE (to the right) allows children to collaborate in cultivating a virtual garden.
