Information Landscapes

These example cybermaps represent Cyberspaces as three dimensional landscapes. These landscape cybermaps are much more abstract representations of Cyberspaces than the previous examples.

The Harmony Internet browser provides 3D information landscape visualisations of Web sites. It was developed by Keith Andrews and colleagues at the Institute for Information Processing and Computer Supported New Media (IICM) at Graz University of Technology. (See Keith Andrew's paper "Visualising Cyberspace: Information Visualisation in the Harmony Internet Browser")

PITS - Populated Information Terrains, an information visualisation technique being developed by Dave Snowdon and colleagues in the University of Nottingham. It is an advanced VR system that allows multiple participants to interact with information and collaborate with each other.

Tim Bray's visualisation of sites in the 'Web Space', calculated from metrics derived from the OpenText search engine. For more information see Bray's paper "Measuring the Web".

Yahoo!3D was an experimental three dimension cybermap of part of Yahoo's hierarchical Web directory. A series of 3D VRML worlds representing parts of the Yahoo directory have been created, which you can walk or fly through to access relevant Web sites. Unfortunately, it is not longer available.

URLGRAPH, developed by Kevin Palfreyman for visualising structured information spaces such as the WWW.

The research of Sara Fabrikant, a graduate student at the Department of Geography, University of Colorado at Boulder , into information searching and browsing using spatial metaphor of the landscape. The screen-shot below shows the prototype landscape interface.
