Topology Maps of Elements of Cyberspace (page 1)

A map of part of the Internet as seen from Geir E.R. Gundersen's computer. Produced by tracing routes to keys sites and graphing the result in an interactive Java applet. Try out his NetBird topology map.

Striking visualisations from Skitter, a new tool by Cooperative Association for Internet Data Analysis (CAIDA) for large-scale collection and analysis of Internet traffic path data. The data is mapped as dense graphs as in the images shown.

The software to create the sophisticated graph layouts shown in the images was implemented by Hal Burch during a summer 1999 internship with Lucent/Bell Laboratories. See Hal Burch and Bill Cheswick's Mapping the Internet project for further information.

The Usenet Crosspost Visualization. It is part of Netscan, an experimental software package designed to aid in the sociological study of the Internet being developed by Marc Smith, a research sociologist at Microsoft Research.

Parasite, an experimental visual email client being developed by Steve Cannon and Gong Szeto at i/o 360. The program presents a map of the topology of email messages and their interrelationships.

These stills are taken from a video developed by k.c. claffy of the Cooperative Association for Internet Data Analysis (CAIDA) and Hans-Werner Braun of the Measurement & operations Analysis Team (MOAT) at NLANR showing the interconnections of major ISP networks. To see all the glorious details you are recommended to download the whole video.

The topology of the ATM backbone of SuperJANET, the UK's high-speed academic network, is presented in the map above. Whilst the schematic map below shows the planned backbone topology of SuperJANET III.
